Republicans are anti-Democratic thugs...
"We have been told by several avid Bush supporters that the days when newspapers publish editorials without personal repercussions are over. As publishers, we have printed editorials for decades, and have endorsed candidates, both Republican and Democrat. When Bush was endorsed four years ago, the Gore supporters did not respond with threats, nor did Democrats when we endorsed Reagan twice. Republicans did not threaten us personally or our business when we endorsed Carter and Clinton for their first terms.

European Social Forum: Another World, But How? |

LONDON - Under as brave a banner as ''Another world is possible'', the third European Social Forum that concluded in London Sunday was always open to the question-but just how?
The question had been raised at the European Social Forum (ESF) in Paris last year. The overwhelming view was that it is time now to move on from protests to proposals that lead to action.
''Social forums have so far been a popular university, an enterprise in people's education,'' Bernard Cassen, president of the Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions to Aid Citizens (ATTAC, after its French name) had said at the end of the Paris ESF. ATTAC was the main organiser of that forum.
''Now, despite the successes in organising social forums to protest against the state of the world, the alter globalisation movement must think of new ways of influencing political decisions to achieve its goals,'' Cassen said. |

A Little Patriotic Sacrifice: $137 billion in tax cuts for corporations. |

There are moments when you see suddenly crystallized in a particular event, a threat to democracy as ominous as the smoke rising from Mt. St. Helens.
This week it was that enormous payoff to big corporations by their subjects in Congress. I say payoffs advisedly. Business elites provide politicians with the money they need to run for office. The politicians pay them back with a return on their investment so generous it boggles the mind. That legislation enacted this week is worth $137 billion in tax cuts for corporations. One company alone -- General Electric -- will receive over $8 billion, despite earnings last year of over $15 billion. Many companies -- Microsoft, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard, Eli Lilly, among others -- have been parking profits overseas rather than bring them back to America where they are taxed. So Congress has now blessed them with a one-time "tax holiday" during which they can bring home the bacon at about one-seventh of the normal tax rates.

On Thursday the 14th, around 200 non-violent protesters gathered in peaceful demonstration to unWelcome George W. Bush in Jacksonville were attacked without provocation by police using pepper spray and less-than-lethal projectiles fired at close range. |

American war protestors show Iraqi's "What Americans are really like" |

NYACK, N.Y. -- More than 2,000 people opposing the war in Iraq, including teachers, lawyers and the father of an American beheaded by terrorists, are sending Iraqis personal photos with protest messages to showcase "what Americans are really like."
The pictures -- meant to be a counterpoint to the infamous images of Americans abusing Iraqi prisoners -- were taken all around the country. In a Quaker meeting house in Massachusetts. On a busy street corner in Missouri. In scores of living rooms and church parking lots.
On Wednesday, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the peace group that organized the project, plans to make the photos available to news media outlets that reach the Middle East.

Wal-Mart store in Quebec Province could be first to unionize |

JONQUIERE, Quebec -- The signs topping sales racks wear the same yellow smiley face, but promise "Chute de Prix," instead of price rollbacks. The boxes of Tide lining the shelves in housewares come packed with a bonus CD, just for Canadian stores, inviting shoppers to experience "la passion du Hockey."
But except for a few tweaks, the low-slung gray and blue Wal-Mart store off highway 70 could be almost any one of the retail Goliath's nearly 5,000 discount emporiums in the United States and eight other countries. And that's what worries executives at the Arkansas headquarters of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
While still not a certainty, the 165 retirees, single moms, students and other hourly workers at this store 2 1/2 hours north of Quebec City could soon become the first anywhere to extract what the world's largest private employer insists its 1.5 million "associates" around the world neither want nor need -- a union contract. A government agency has certified the workers as a union and told the two sides to negotiate.
