According to Middle East analyst Dilip Hero, the success of Hamas in the Palestinian parliamentary elections comes as other Islamist groups gaining political strength in the Middle East. Last year Islamist candidates won most of the seats in the municipal elections in Saudi Arabia. In Lebannon, Hizbollah has emerged as the preeminent representative of Lebanese Shiites. In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood won 60% of the seats it contested last year. And in Iraq, religious Shiite and Sunni parties performed best in December parliamentary elections.
To talk about the emergence of Hamas as a political force in the Occupied Territories, we speak with investigative journalist Robert Dreyfuss. He writes about the rise of Hamas in his new book Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam.

Manhunt in sex case nets officer |

LAVAL, QUE. — He was a long-time member of the Montreal police surveillance squad, the specialized team of plainclothes officers who use stealth and know-how to trail criminals.
But in a sordid twist, the 13-year veteran, who is married to another Montreal police officer, became the target of an investigation himself, as the suspect in a series of brutal sexual assaults.
On Wednesday, the Sûreté du Québec arrested Constable Benoît Guay, 34, after stopping him on a highway as he was heading with his wife toward their home, in Laval, a suburb north of Montreal.
The arrest ended a massive police hunt for a sex predator who prowled the sprawling bedroom communities north of Montreal, including Laval, attacking young women walking alone at night.

Constable Guay was charged yesterday on 22 criminal counts, including sexual assault with a weapon, assault, uttering death threats, kidnapping and confinement.
The alleged incidents involved seven young female victims.
Five of them were under 18, one of whom was attacked the night of her 15th birthday.
The assaults began in the spring of 2004. Police said at the time that the suspect approached his victims in parks, cycling paths or bus shelters and threatened them with a knife.
According to the court indictment, the predator hit again in the spring of 2005, this time using a handgun.
The assaults took place in different towns but eventually a computer analysis signalled to police that they were similar incidents. A joint squad of 10 detectives from four different police forces was set up and pored over 850 leads and checked 200 vehicles.
Last fall, the task force issued a composite sketch for a man who wore a baseball cap and drove a limited-edition red Honda hatchback with a two-part trunk door... |

According to numerous reports and audits released by entities such as the inspectors general (IGs) of agencies that deal with national security and various presidential commissions, today, more than four years after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, almost all our national security related agencies are in disarray, riddled with incompetence, corruption, and in some cases criminal activities. While most of the real problems facing our national security today stem from gross mismanagement, inefficiency, incompetence, and a lack of sensible policies and vigorous oversight, the Bush administration insists upon blaming these deficiencies on a regrettable and dangerous lack of power in the executive branch. But the kind of power the administration pursues is the kind of power that would vault the presidency to monarchical status and nullify the Bill of Rights. |

Friday 27th at 12:00 at the Boston State House has been declared international Holocaust Industry Lobby hour. Here is a revealing look at the formation of this fast growing industry.
Jewish American historian Norman Finkelstein argues in his explosive new book, "The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering" that Holocaust remembrance has been exploited by the Jewish establishment.
In his book he contends that a greater threat to the memory of the Holocaust than Holocaust deniers is what he calls 'The Holocaust Industry'.
He accuses those who exploit the Holocaust of telling lies and of naked greed. He argues that the ruthless industrialisation of the Holocaust has encouraged the rebirth of anti-semitism in Europe and the United States.
The son of survivors of the Warsaw ghetto and concentration camps, he says, "I do care about the memory of my family's persecution. The current campaign of the Holocaust industry to extort money from Europe in the name of "needy Holocaust victims" has shrunk the moral stature of their martyrdom to that of a Monte Carlo casino."

There's an earthquake in Mideast politics today. Palestinians have gone to the polls and elected, it appears, Hamas to power. Hamas, which runs medical clinics and charity networks across the impoverished West Bank and Gaza, is seen by many Palestinians as a champion of clean government.
Hamas is the Islamic militant group that has carried out nearly sixty suicide bombings in Israel in the last five years. It is also the group that is committed by charter to the destruction of the state of Israel.
The prime minister and cabinet of Yasser Arafat's long-dominant Fatah party have quit. Democracy is in gear, and a group called terrorists by Washington and Israel is in power.
