"I was informed that there were 173 detainees held at an Interior Ministry prison and they appear to be malnourished," al-Jaafari said of Sunday's raid at a detention center in the fashionable Jadriyah district. "There is also some talk that they were subjected to some kind of torture."

Pentagon admits using white phosphorous in Iraq as a weapon against human beings. The Pentagon denies using it against civilians, despite photographic evidence provided by Italian documentary.
Of course, it is impossible to use the powedered weapon in open air within a city without willfully murdering civilians, so, once again, the Pentagon is lying. |

It's that time of year again...
Thanksgiving was around the corner. Inventory was up and sales were down. The boss wanted a large bonus but was unsure of his prospects so he compared this year's projected bottom line to last year's. To his dismay, this year, though better than last, was not as profitable as predicted. He had an image to uphold, his children expected many gifts, and his wife was telling tall tales about his success as of late. The boss needed to do something and do it fast if he were to rescue this year's precious bonus.

Two former Iraqi detainees tell ABC News in an exclusive interview that they were repeatedly tortured by U.S. forces seeking information about Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction.
Thahee Sabbar and Sherzad Khalid are two of eight men who, with help from the American Civil Liberties Union and the group Human Rights First, are suing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The men claim they were tortured for months, in violation of the U.S. Constitution and international law. |

Study: Bipolar Kids Often More Creative |

Children with or at risk for bipolar disorder may be more creative than other, healthy children, according to a new study.
Researchers found that a small group of children of bipolar parents scored significantly higher on a creativity index than other children. They say the findings add to a growing evidence of a link between mood disorders, like bipolar disorder, and creativity.
"I think it's fascinating," says researcher Kiki Chang, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, in a news release. "There is a reason that many people who have bipolar disorder become very successful.â€
Researchers say many eminent artists, writers, and other creative individuals have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which is marked by dramatic shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function.
But they say this is the first study to look at creativity in the children of bipolar parents, who are at increased risk of developing the disorder...
** I find it ironic that Bipolar "Disorder" is considered a disorder at all. Why do we define divergence from the normal as a disorder? Bipolar people should be called hyper-creative, not mentally ill. ** |

Meditation can boost your gray matter |

Meditation alters brain patterns in ways that are likely permanent, scientists have known. But a new study shows key parts of the brain actually get thicker through the practice.
Brain imaging of regular working folks who meditate regularly revealed increased thickness in cortical regions related to sensory, auditory and visual perception, as well as internal perception — the automatic monitoring of heart rate or breathing, for example.
The study also indicates that regular meditation may slow age-related thinning of the frontal cortex. |

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The federal government should strengthen the health care system for veterans, retired Marine Gen. Joseph P. Hoar said Saturday in the Democratic Party's weekly radio address.
Speaking on the Veterans Day weekend, the former U.S. military commander in the Middle East said "President Bush has consistently refused to provide enough" money for veterans' health care.
"Earlier this year, his administration admitted that they were $1 billion short in funding for critical health care services," he said. "They also repeatedly tried to increase the cost of prescription drugs and health care services for veterans nationwide." |
