Friendly fire pilot sues U.S. air force |

The U.S. pilot who killed four Canadian soldiers in a friendly fire incident in 2002 is suing his country's air force, saying it ruined his reputation.
National Guard Maj. Harry Schmidt says air force officials erred when they released the letter of reprimand that he was given for the bombing.
The military violated privacy laws when it released confidential personal information. It also violated a settlement agreement that he signed at the time.
"The government flat out failed to comply with their agreement," Schmidt's lawyer, Charles Gittins, told the Associated Press.
He is seeking unspecified damages. |

Group burns Mexican flag in front of consulate |

Dozens of protestors and counter protestors showed up in front of Tucson’s Mexican Consulate as a Mexican flag was burned in a heated debate that saw tempers flare.
Border Guardians, a group formed along the Arizona border to speak out against the estimated thousands of illegal immigrants that enter the U.S. every day through the Tucson sector, led the protest.
“Flags are symbols of government, not of people," shouted Roy Warden, as a member of his group, Border Guardians, set foot to the Mexican Flag.
One woman speaking out against the Border Guardians yelled, “This is not a gesture of humanity, this is a gesture that provokes.†|

Peace activist feared being shot, inquest told |

An inquest into the death of a British activist shot while acting as a human shield in the Gaza Strip today heard how he had contemplated what it would be like to be hit by a bullet.
Tom Hurndall, 22, from north London was wearing an orange jacket to mark him out as a peace activist and had apparently been trying to move young Palestinian children from the line of fire when he was hit in the head. He died was left in a coma and died nine months later... |

Peru faces presidential run-off |

A nationalist ex-army officer has won the first round of Peru's presidential election but the race is likely to go to a run-off, exit polls suggest.
While Ollanta Humala's lead was clear, different polls had either the conservatives' Lourdes Flores or ex-President Alan Garcia as runner-up.
A new round looks likely on 7 May as Mr Humala is unlikely to obtain the 50% of votes needed for outright victory.

Up to 500,000 march in Dallas |

About 4:50 p.m., Dallas police estimated the crowd size to be 350,000 to 500,000 in an e-mail from Senior Cpl. Jamie Kimbrough.
Peaceful protest pleases chief
At a police security briefing that ended about 3:15 p.m., Dallas police Chief David Kunkle reported that no one had been arrested and no noteworthy offenses had been committed amid the crowd that was widely estimated at 100,000.
Speculation put the crowd at up to 500,000, although police had no comment on that number.
“It’s been a very good day for the city,†Chief Kunkle said. “This is a family-oriented group that’s come here to demonstrate. No one we saw looked like they were planning to cause any problems.â€
Chief Kunkle attributed the peaceful nature of the protest to the work of the volunteers and organizers, as well as police efforts to marginalize the small groups of counterprotesters.
“Even I’m surprised about the nature of the crowd. I think the people have been educated to ignore the other protesters,†he said... |

Hamas in call to end suicide bombings |

Hamas is to abandon its use of suicide bombers, who have killed almost 300 Israelis, in any future confrontations with Israel, its activists have told The Observer.
The Islamic group, which leads the Palestinian Authority, says, however, that it may resort to other forms of violence if there is no progress towards Palestinian statehood.
Yihiyeh Musa, a Hamas member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, said Hamas had moved into a 'new era' which did not require suicide attacks.
'The suicide bombings happened in an exceptional period and they have now stopped,' he said. 'They came to an end as a change of belief.'
As Hamas toned down its rhetoric, Israel increased pressure on the Palestinians, particularly in Gaza. Two militants were killed in an airstrike near Gaza City yesterday and five men and a five-year-old boy were killed on Friday night.,, |
