Records kept by the SS Oberführer in charge show the deaths at the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar numbered 6,477 in January, 5,614 in February, 5,479 in March, and 915 in April. The April toll was only up to the 10th of the month. The next day the American Third Army overran the area and brought release to the 21,000 inmates at this resort of starvation, torture, hangings and shootings.
Mostly the inmates were pitiful wrecks. At one time up to 80,000 people from a score of nations were here made to work long hours on the production of bombs... |

It is the overwhelming masses of China that will assert their primacy against minority government and then spill across borders into surrounding regions. Existing maps of Asia and Europe will become redundant overnight. People across the globe will be spurred into action as they drag their corrupt leaders from their lairs to face the quick judgement of the people. The bunkers deep in mountains, designed to harbour criminal elites in times of devastation, have only a finite supply of resources before the inhabitants must emerge to face the final judgement of the people; justice is patient. |

Environmentalists, Indigenous People Disappointed by COP8 |

CURITIBA, Brazil, Mar 31 (IPS) - Environmental and indigenous activists are leaving the eighth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP8), which ended Friday in this southern Brazilian city, with a sense of disappointment, because of the absence both of practical decisions and of their participation in key negotiations.
COP8 was a "failure," according to Greenpeace International. "The Convention on Biological Diversity is like a ship drifting without a captain to steer it," said Martin Kaiser, Greenpeace political adviser on forests, who complained that the Conference failed to determine means of financing the fulfilment of the goal of significantly reducing loss of biodiversity by 2010.
"We will continue to fight for full participation in negotiations on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing," said Viviana Figueroa of the Omaguaca people from northwestern Argentina. She is one of the spokespersons for the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), which promotes the presence of indigenous people at the COPs.
So far, indigenous people have been kept out of the discussions on these issues, which directly affect them. COP8 also "backpedalled" in other areas, with the voice of indigenous peoples being diluted in discussions on ways of protecting traditional knowledge and practices, said Lourdes Amos, from the Philippines... |

Nepal: Revolution Denied? |

KATHMANDU, Apr 12 (IPS) - Local news reports described a playful but determined crowd of thousands of Nepalis who sat down to occupy a road for five hours, singing, reciting poetry and, most importantly, stopping riot police and soldiers from entering their community.
But a visit to the town of Kirtipur 24 hours later found locals rushing to do their shopping before Tuesday's curfew began and students in small groups on the narrow streets chatting. The only people sitting were clusters of blue-uniformed riot police with their canes and Plexiglas shields at their sides. Arriving hours before, they waited on doorsteps for the curfew, and protests, to start.
The revolution had not begun in the university town on the hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley... |

We Are Globalized, But Have No Real Intimacy with the Rest of the World |

This prompts a deeper question: has the world, since then, gone backwards? Has the effect of globalization been to promote a less respectful and more intolerant attitude in the west, and certainly on the part of the US, towards other cultures, religions and societies? This contradicts the widely held view that globalization has made the world smaller and everyone more knowing. The answer, at least in some respects, is in the affirmative - with untold consequences lying in wait for us. But more of that later; first, why and how has globalization had this effect? |

US Plots ‘New Liberation of Baghdad’ |

THE American military is planning a “second liberation of Baghdad†to be carried out with the Iraqi army when a new government is installed.
Pacifying the lawless capital is regarded as essential to establishing the authority of the incoming government and preparing for a significant withdrawal of American troops.
Strategic and tactical plans are being laid by US commanders in Iraq and at the US army base in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, under Lieutenant- General David Petraeus. He is regarded as an innovative officer and was formerly responsible for training Iraqi troops.
The battle for Baghdad is expected to entail a “carrot-and-stick†approach, offering the beleaguered population protection from sectarian violence in exchange for rooting out insurgent groups and Al-Qaeda.
Sources close to the Pentagon said Iraqi forces would take the lead, supported by American air power, special operations, intelligence, embedded officers and back-up troops... |
