Covering their faces in order to be seen: Zapatista International Meeting |

The Chiapas-based rebels open an autonomous village to international visitors
The Zapatistas organized conference-style discussion sessions on indigenous autonomy, health, education, women´s participation and experience, media, art, culture and land where representatives from the five rebel Zapatista regions took turns speaking on their experiences organizing village life without help or permission from the federal government.
"The people make the decisions, we only propose; we don´t impose," said Jesús, a young member of the good government council of La Realidad during the workshop on autonomy that was held in a wood and corrugated sheet metal auditorium with a dirt floor covered in pine needles as soft as any carpet.
Council members are elected in open assemblies; they serve for three years without salary, though villagers support them with food, childcare and travel funds.
In the four years of operating in Good Government Councils, Zapatistas have opened schools in every village and regional center, health clinics, women´s artesian cooperatives, and organic coffee cooperatives. |

Bungles, Ghosts and Damage Control |
Submitted by: jack rider / 04 Jan 2007

The Whitehouse is in damage control over the bungled execution of Saddam Hussein. The hurried execution backfired in the worst possible way; a vanquished leader should never be allowed to continue his work from the 'grave'. Anthropologists are familiar with appeasement rituals and ceremonies for the dead, which are common to numerous cultures. In the wake of Saddam's bungled execution these curious rituals begin to make sense. |

A 12 year old special education student peed her pants out of fear when Kevin Duckworth, the Principle, came down on her for refusing to do slave labor in the school's cafeteria. Kevin Duckworth, not known for his compassion, ethics, or intelligence, called the police who arrested the girl and charged her with disorderly conduct.
Welcome to fascism.

os Pueblos Zapatistas have organized an Encounter with the Pueblos of the World, for December 30th through January 2nd in Oventik, Liberated Territory (Chiapas), Mexico.
The EZLN, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, has welcomed thousands of visitors to Oventik to celebrate the new year (and the 13th anniversary of their armed uprising) with workshops & meetings designed, in the words of Teniente Coronel Insurgente Moises, to 'speak on the experiences we have had these past years with our autonomous governments; the challenges and problems that we have faced constructing this anti-capitalist project and we will try to, with humility and respect, to respond, speak, and exchange, and above all, share our errors and stumblings, and also our modest achievments.' |

In Plain Sight |
Submitted by: Kingfisher / 02 Jan 2007

Welcome to 2007, the year of plain sight and little doubt! The criminal incompetence of the Bush regime is impossible to hide, thanks in part to a highly successful American son, Bill Gates -- and everyone thought that Bin Laden posed the greatest threat to the American way of life! It was Bill Gates, the world’s most successful capitalist, who, a decade ago, accelerated the development of the "information super highway". His superbly streamlined and devastatingly efficient marketing machine facilitated the age of open communication that many take for granted today. |
