A Cartoon from Bob Geiger
Impeachment is an obligation and system remedy, not an option or personal vendetta. The goal is preserving checks and balances and separation of powers and preventing melting of the dollar.

Bush confirms he has something to hide the old fashioned way: He makes threats...
WASHINGTON (AP) - A defiant President Bush warned Democrats Tuesday to accept his offer to have top aides testify about the firings of federal prosecutors only privately and not under oath or risk a constitutional showdown from which he would not back down.

Democrats' response to his proposal was swift and firm: They said they would start authorizing subpoenas as soon as Wednesday for the White House aides...

Post invasion Iraqi death count passes 1 million.
POST-INVASION IRAQI EXCESS DEATHS. In October 2006 an estimate of “655,000 post-invasion excess deaths in Occupied Iraq as of July 2006” came from a top medical epidemiology research team in America's (and the World's) top Public Health Department (the Bloomberg School of Public Health) at a top US university (Johns Hopkins) and was published peer-reviewed in a top medical journal (The Lancet) and endorsed by 27 top Australian medical experts in the area (see: MWC News: http://mwcnews.net/content/view/12163/42/ ; http://mwcnews.net/content/view/1375/247/ and http://mwcnews.net/content/view/11293/42/ ).

Consider the following estimate from the Johns Hopkins medical scientists of "annual death rate per 1,000 of population" of 13.3 (post-invasion Iraq) as compared to (a) 5.5 (for pre-invasion Iraq after 12 years of crippling Sanctions) and (b) 4.0 (for Iraq's resource-poor but peaceful neighbours Syria and Jordan; UN Population Division data: http://esa.un.org/unpp/ ).

The "post-invasion excess death rate/1000 of population" was 13.3 - 5.5 = 7.8 (Comparison A) or 13.3 - 4.0 = 9.3 (Comparison B). Assuming an average population of 27 million, the "post-invasion excess deaths" total (over 4 years i.e. as of February 2007) (A) 7.8 x 2,700 x 4 = 842,000 and (B) 9.3 x 2,700 x 4 = 1,004,400 i.e. ONE MILLION.

The Morning Star also reports on claims by Dr Gideon Polya that the death toll in Iraq had hit 1 million as of February this year. That may in fact be a valid claim, or at least in the vicinity of truth, although I would add that it isn't in fact based on a new survey, but an extrapolation of the Lancet's figures based on a uniform rate of excess deaths continuing for six months after the survey was completed. Further, the one million figure is based on a comparison not with the pre-war mortality figure but with those persisting in unoccupied neighbouring countries. It may in fact be an underestimate, since the mortality rate rather than remaining static has increased year on year. These are grim thoughts, catastrophic possibilities. But as a milestone, one million is unlikely to be the end of it. It cost up to five million to get the Americans out of Indochina.

If you add together the 1.7 million deaths from the sanctions with the 1+ million post invasion deaths we are very close to 3 million dead Iraqis.

FBI Repeatedly and Knowingly Used Fraud to Obtain Private Information: No one plans on charging FBI criminals for their well documented crimes
FBI counterterrorism officials continued to use flawed procedures to obtain thousands of U.S. telephone records during a two-year period when bureau lawyers and managers were expressing escalating concerns about the practice, according to senior FBI and Justice Department officials and documents...

The flawed procedures involved the use of emergency demands for records, called "exigent circumstance" letters, which contained false or undocumented claims. They also included national security letters that were issued without FBI rules being followed. Both types of request were served on three phone companies.

Referring to the exigent circumstance letters, Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote in a letter Friday to Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine: "It is . . . difficult to imagine why there should not have been swift and severe consequences for anyone who knowingly signed . . . a letter containing false statements. Anyone at the FBI who knew about that kind of wrongdoing had an obligation to put a stop to it and report it immediately."

A March 9 report by Fine bluntly stated that the FBI's use of the exigency letters "circumvented" the law that governs the FBI's access to personal information about U.S. residents...

The Politics of Apathy: an Australian story
While America leads the world in insularism and denial, Australia is the world leader in complacency and apathy. No cultural equivalent for the Oz expression, "she’ll be right, mate", exists anywhere -- notwithstanding the variation of "who gives a shit?" Today, non-involvement is proving to be a very costly cultural habit. America has become the world's most hated nation and will soon attract very real consequences for its actions, one of which is the acquisition of Australia as a colonial trophy. Australia remains an international laughing stock under the servile leadership of lackey prime minister, John Howard; Aussies are experiencing their eleventh year under the rule of the most slavish, gutless, lying, duplicitous, cringing, government on record. No other leader in world history has displayed the servility and cowardice of John Howard. When America says jump, the despicable little coward, Howard, says how high, boss!
